| Subject: DIY: "Headlights still on" Buzzer...under $5 Sun 30 Dec 2007, 4:10 pm | |
| For those of you that are like me and don't have a buzzer that goes off if you leave your headlights on, I figured I'd write a quick and simple DIY for you...I can't tell you how many times I've had my lights on while it's raining and forget they're on and leave them on because I didn't have a buzzer telling me they were. So for anyone that wants to know, here it is... 1. First you're going to grab $5 bucks from where ever you can get it...(should actually be about $3.75ish) 2. Next you're gonna head to your nearest friendly RadioShack 3. You can tell the guy at the counter that you want a "12 volt Buzzer"...but he'll just give you a look like you just tried to order a pizza from him. So skip the weird look and just say "I know what I need" and go back to where they have the little drawers of doodads and there will be a drawer for BUZZERS. In this drawer there will be several choices. I recommend the smallest little black round one as it will be easiest to mount. It's a 12V Piezo Buzzer and it looks like this... ** DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BY THE ONE LABELED "PIEZO SIREN"**...This one will make your ears bleed. It is one that can be used as a theft deturant and I made the mistake of buying this one first (till i learned my lesson) and about crapped myself when i was under the dash hooking it up and it went off right next to my ear. The one NOT TO BUY looks like this... 4. After you have bought the little round 12v Piezo Buzzer...go back home and get ready for the part that's a little bit of a pain in the neck. I just say that because I hate getting under the dash. You're going to take the buzzer out of the package and lay upside down by your front seat where the fuze box under the dash is. Here you will see the fuzes and you want to hook the black and red wires up like so... Red Wire = 10A Fuse (Instrument Lights/Taillights/Parking Lights, etc.) Black Wire = 20A Fuse (Wiper/Washer System, Moonroof Relays, etc.) or 10A Fuse that's next to it (Back-Up Light, clock, etc.) To do this, you can just bend the wires around the tip of the fuse (excuse the drawing, but I didn't want to try to take a picture of this...figured MSPaint could do the trick)... 5. Now you're just going to get some double sided tape or do like i did and role a little duct tape and make it double sided and just stick it to the side of the fuse box and you now will have a nice beeeeeeeeep (nothing painful) if you leave the lights on with the car off. It will shut off as soon as you turn the key to the start spot (like the point that the SRS and Seatbelt light come on at). When you're done it should look something like this... (Again, pic shows it on the 20A fuse, but you can also use the 10A fuse next to it ) If anyone needs any help doing this, just let me know. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Hope this helps...it's great. I just did mine today btw. Have fun. | |
